Ms. Hernandez has extensive experience in both private practice and state and local government.

Early in her career, Ms. Hernandez served a one-year term as a judicial law clerk to United States District Judge James O. Browning.  During that year, she worked on civil and criminal cases in a wide range of areas.  She handled legal issues at all stages of litigation from filing through trial.

Ms. Hernandez spent the initial years of her practice at the law firm of Rodey, Dickason, Sloan, Akin & Robb, P.A. in Albuquerque, New Mexico.  At the Rodey Firm, she gained significant litigation and trial experience in both state and federal courts in the areas of personal injury, wrongful death, medical malpractice, and employment law.  In 2008, the New Mexico Defense Lawyers Association recognized Ms. Hernandez as the Young Defense Lawyer of the Year.  She became a partner with the firm in 2009.

In 2011, Ms. Hernandez was selected as General Counsel for New Mexico Governor Susana Martinez.  In that role, she was responsible for providing legal advice directly to the Governor and her staff, as well as for overseeing and directing the legal operations of more than twenty executive departments and agencies.  During her time serving in the Office of the Governor, she was recognized as one of Albuquerque’s Forty Under 40 in 2011.  In addition to serving as General Counsel, Ms. Hernandez served as Deputy Chief of Staff for Governor Martinez from 2012 to 2015.

In 2015, Ms. Hernandez was nominated and confirmed as the City Attorney for the City of Albuquerque.  As City Attorney, Ms. Hernandez oversaw all aspects of the City’s legal representation.  She oversaw a staff of thirty attorneys representing the City in matters across a broad range of areas, including general legal advice on daily operational issues across all departments, civil rights and personal injury litigation, labor relations, personnel matters, land use and development, and utility law.  Ms. Hernandez completed her term as City Attorney in November 2017.

Ms. Hernandez grew up in Albuquerque.  She obtained her undergraduate degree in Economics and her law degree from the University of New Mexico.  She is active in the local community, including serving on the Board of Directors for the United Way of Central New Mexico.
